21 Days of Prayer – Week 1

WEEK 1 – Devotional by Mike Anderson

Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.
Ephesians 4:11-13 NLT

Leadership is an often-misunderstood word. Frequently, I find that people only refer to it in noun-form…referring to people placed higher up in a structural setting. We hear leadership and equate it to manager, boss, pastor etc.

At face value, this passage can seem to be about that as well. Prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers…the “leadership positions” of the church. Strictly speaking, it’s true – but it is so much more significant than that.

The truth is, leadership is much more than a noun. I love that we are a part of a church that teaches about the action of leadership – setting an example through what we do.

Here is one of the most significant things I have learned in this church:

Before I can lead others…
While I am leading others…
After I have led others…

I must always be leading myself.

In the context of the body of Christ, the purpose of leadership is to bring ourselves to a place of unity. Imagine what could happen if we came together as the church, united in our pursuit of Jesus & His kingdom.

Day 2 – Pray For Our Church Leadership

Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.
Ephesians 4:11-12

Day 3 – Pray For Our Church’s Influence

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Acts 1:8

Take time today to pray for influence in our city and that the church would reach people of influence in our schools, businesses, sports, etc. that would come to know Jesus.

Day 4 – Pray For Our City

And work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare.
Jeremiah 29:7

Take time today to pray for answers to the problems in our cities; for wisdom for our leaders and that they would hear from Christ.

Day 5 – Pray For Our Elected Officials

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior.
1 Timothy 2:1-3

Day 6 – Pray For New Visitors To Our Church

…to open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God’s people, who are set apart by faith in me.
Acts 26:18

Day 7 – Pray For Our Church To Raise New Leaders

He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.”
Matthew 9:37-38
