Built to Last

“Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.” -Winston Churchill

John 16:30-33 (NIV): “Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God. “You believe at last!” Jesus answered.  “But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

“Uncertainty creates the necessary condition for leadership.” – Jim Kouzes

Hebrews 2:18: “Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.”

2 Cor 4:16-18 (NIV): “ 16Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

Pressure Points:

  1. Significance

Temporary: To tell time

Eternal: Build a clock

It takes a long time for a suddenly to happen…not just in the context of the miraculous but even in our own spiritual esteem

Gen 12:2 (NIV) – “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.”

Gen 13:14-17 (NIV) – “The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.  All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.  I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then you offspring could be counted.  Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.”

Miracles are in response to the temporal, the blessing of God is eternal

  1. Busyness

Temporary:  Work, Work, Work

Eternal: When you unplug

Mark 3:14 (NIV) – He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach

I would rather be with God, than just do for God

Have we become “experts” and stopped being disciples?

  1. Insecurity

Temporary: Need for Validation

“As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”- C.S. Lewis

Eternal: My Identity is my wealth

Psalm 29:11 (NIV) – “The Lord gives strength to His people; the Lord blesses His people with peace.”

Isaiah 46:4 (NCV) “Even when you are old, I will be the same. Even when your hair has turned gray, I will take care of you. I made you and will take care of you. I will carry you and save you.”

What you think about yourself will control what you do in your life

More importantly-What you think about yourself will control what you let God do through your life.

1 John 3:19-22 (NIV) – “This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him.”

Ps 119:60 (NIV) – “I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands.”

  1. Convictions

Temporary: Convenience of frustration

Eternal: Conviction of Contentment

Disciplined action at moments of great stress

Convenience manipulates…Conviction Motivates

Jim Collins-“The signature of mediocrity is not an unwillingness to change.  The signature of mediocrity is chronic inconsistency.”

Proverbs 19:23 (NIV): “Fear of the Lord leads to life: then one rests content, untouched by trouble”

Philippians 4:11 (NIV) – “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”

Practice Contentment Continually

  1. Control over “all things”

Temporary: You control…you function in manual

Eternal: God controls…you function in automatic

Task ahead of you is never as great as the power behind you

Erwin McManus: “If the Cross teaches us anything, it teaches us that sometimes God comes through after we’ve been killed.”
