Fathers we don’t need today By Pastor Steve Kelly

1. Absent Fathers

Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)
Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

2. We don’t need fathers, who like Eli, Would not train and discipline their children.

1 Samuel 2:12,17 (NIV)
12 Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard for the Lord. 17 This sin of the young men was very great in the Lord’s sight, for they were treating the Lord’s offering with contempt.

Proverbs 29:15-17 (NIV)
A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother. When the wicked thrive, so does sin, but the righteous will see their downfall. Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.

3. We don’t need fathers who practive stealing, deception, and dishonesty as achan did.

Joshua 6:17-19 (NIV)
The city and all that is in it are to be devoted to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent. But keep away from the devoted things, so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it. All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.”

Joshua 7:11 (NIV)
Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions.

Josh 7:20-21 (NIV) Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I have done: When I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia, two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”

Joshua 7:25-26 (NIV)
Joshua said, “Why have you brought this trouble on us? The Lord will bring trouble on you today.” Then all Israel stoned him, and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them. Over Achan they heaped up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day. Then the Lord turned from his fierce anger. Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor ever since.

4. We don’t need fathers who pitch their tent towards Sodom.

Genesis 13:10-13 (NIV)
Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.
