Principles of Giving by Pastor Steve Kelly

John 3:16(NIV)
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Matthew 10:8b (NIV)
Freely you have received, freely give.

Matthew 6:12 (NIV)
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

Principles of Giving
1. Keep your heart soft to the poor.

Deuteronomy 15:7-8 (NKJV)
“If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother, but you shall open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs.

2. God calls selfishness wicked.

Deuteronomy 15:9 (NKJV)
Beware lest there be a wicked thought in your heart, saying, ‘The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand,’ and your eye be evil against your poor brother and you give him nothing, and he cry out to the Lord against you, and it become sin among you.

Deuteronomy 15:9 (CEV)
Be careful! Don’t say to yourself, “Soon it will be the seventh year, and then I won’t be able to get my money back.” It would be horrible for you to think that way and to be so selfish that you refuse to help the poor. They are your relatives, and if you don’t help them, they may ask the LORD to decide whether you have done wrong. And he will say that you are guilty.

3. Don’t allow grief in your heart.

Deuteronomy 15:10 (NKJV)
You shall surely give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the Lord your God will bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand.

4. Develop a generous heart.

Deuteronomy 15:14 (NIV)
Supply them liberally from your flock, your threshing floor and your winepress. Give to them as the Lord your God has blessed you.

5. Develop a grateful heart.

Deuteronomy 15:15 (NIV)
Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you. That is why I give you this command today.
