Several years ago, I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. The grueling treatment involved weekly rounds of intense chemotherapy as well as routine radiation that left me physically battered. On one particular day, I was extremely weak and nauseous from the previous day’s chemotherapy. I knew I needed some nourishment for my body, but the thought of most food made me even more nauseated. The only food I could imagine stomaching were oranges; however, I was all out of them, and I did not have the strength for a trip to the store.
At that moment, I heard an unexpected knock on the door. It was the wife of one of the pastors from our church we were attending at the time. She sheepishly apologized for visiting unannounced, but said she felt a very strong prompting from God to deliver something to me. She said she even tried to ignore God because His instruction seemed silly, but His voice just got louder. She was holding a brown bag, and, as she reached her hand inside to reveal the contents, she expressed how embarrassed she was for bringing such a ridiculous gift. She proceeded to pull out a large bag of naval oranges…exactly the food I craved!
As I explained to her that oranges were the only food I could tolerate, we stood on my doorstep together and marveled at God’s faithfulness. He never takes His eyes off of us. Not only does He see us, but He knows us, He loves us, and He delights in providing for our needs….even the simple ones, like navel oranges!
“The LORD your God is with you; his power gives you victory. The LORD will take delight in you, and in his love he will give you new life. He will sing and be joyful over you.”
Zephaniah 3:17 (Good News Translation)
Lord Jesus, thank you for your great love that you lavish onto us. I rejoice in the victory and new life found in you! I stand in awe and expectation for you to “wow” me personally and tangibly with your grace, mercy, and loving kindness. AMEN.
