1. David on his death bed had to deal with things he ignored.
1 Kings 1:1-4 (NIV)
When King David was very old, he could not keep warm even when they put covers over him. So his attendants said to him, “Let us look for a young virgin to serve the king and take care of him. She can lie beside him so that our lord the king may keep warm.” Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful young woman and found Abishag, a Shunammite, and brought her to the king. The woman was very beautiful; she took care of the king and waited on him, but the king had no sexual relations with her.
1 Kings 1:5-6 (NIV)
Now Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, “I will be king.” So he got chariots and horses ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him. (His father had never rebuked him by asking, “Why do you behave as you do?” He was also very handsome and was born next after Absalom.)
1 Kings 1:7 (NIV)
Adonijah conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, and they gave him their support.
2. Offended people find each other.
John 15:1-6 (NIV)
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.
A. God is interested in results
v. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
B. It’s possible to be in Christ and be ineffective.

C. The key to fruitfulness is to remain in God-ordained attachments.

D. Like a branch, it can look like you are bearing fruit, but you’re actually dead/cut off from the source of life.

E. Cast forth/thrown away isolated.

F. Withered, bitter, removed.

G. Such branches men gather/are picked up.

H. Thrown into the fire.

3. David listened to people who were most influential in his life.
1 Kings 1:29-30 (NIV)
The king then took an oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble, 30 I will surely carry out this very day what I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel: Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.”
1 Kings 1:33-35 (NIV)
he said to them: “Take your lord’s servants with you and have Solomon my son mount my own mule and take him down to Gihon. There have Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him king over Israel. Blow the trumpet and shout, ‘Long live King Solomon!’ Then you are to go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.”
David’s death bed hit list:
1. Solomon spares Adonijah if he remains loyal
2. Joab: Do with him as you want but don’t let him grow old
1 Kings 2:6 (NIV)
Deal with him according to your wisdom, but do not let his gray head go down to the grave in peace.
3. Shimei: The man who cursed him and had thrown rocks at him.
2 Kings 2:8-9 (NIV)
“And remember, you have with you Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, who called down bitter curses on me the day I went to Mahanaim. When he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore to him by the Lord: ‘I will not put you to death by the sword.’ But now, do not consider him innocent. You are a man of wisdom; you will know what to do to him. Bring his gray head down to the grave in blood.”
4. Adonijah: Wasn’t killed by Solomon as David commanded but was warned by Solomon to behave… and now he goes to Bathsheba.
5. Solomon kicked the priest Abiathar out of the priesthood.
